The London Book Fair International Book Industry Excellence Awards 2014 were announced from the fair this week. The inaugural Awards, which are held in association with The UK Publishers Association and the British Council, showcase the best international companies and individuals from across the publishing industry.

One Indian publisher has made it to the podium. Tara Books won in the Trade Children’s & Young Adult category. This year marks Tara Books’ 20th anniversary. Tara Books are known worldwide for content that is as aesthetic as it is political; restoring the senses to the book, through printing experiments; reinventing the book as cultural object through innovative work with art, illustration and design.

Said Gita Wolf, Founder & Publisher, Tara Books: “For us, the award is important, being granted by peers in the industry. It’s an affirmation of the publishing values we all share and hold dear.”

Observed the jury: “Tara Books is the winner of the International Children’s and YA publishers Award because they are a publisher who operate with a high profile, not just in their home territory of India, but also internationally, due to their incredible success as co-edition publishers.  The hallmarks of their books are in the values that inform their publications: the high production values of their handmade books, the quality and originality of the content of the books and the beautiful design of everything that they produce.   They are one of a handful of small publishers at work whose integrity and principals ensure their standing in the international community.”
